Learn to Unlearn and Relearn
January 2020 and earlier, I always struggling to acquire new skills and have an excuse for lack of time and was not accepting that, I procrastinate :).
COVID-19 pandemic where has locked down the life but has kicked out my excuse of lack of time as well.
There's now plenty of time and plenty of skills as well. Now procrastination helping me here for deciding 1 skill or start multiple skills at a time. {You know, procrastinate people like me always find a reason :)}
Accidentally I came across a book of Josh Kaufman, "The First 20 Hours" which has opened my mind and helps me to focus on 1 skill or project and finish it. His style of writing (i will say it teaching) is like that when we are reading him it started to be an image in mind and you will keep starting the mind map. He writes down some skills e.g. yoga, programming, Touch Typing, Go, Ukulele, and Windsurfing and takes the reader with him step by step.
10 Principles of "Rapid Skills Acquisition
He first gave 10 principles of "Rapid Skills Acquisition" (in his own words below);
1- Choose a loveable project.
2- Focus your energy on one skill at a time.
3- Define your target performance level.
4- Deconstruct the skill into subskills.
5- Obtain Critical tools.
6- Eliminate barriers to practice.
7- Make dedicated time for practice
8- Create fast feedback loops.
9- Practice by the clock in short bursts.
10- Emphasize quantity and speed.
10 Principles of "Effective Learning"
Next step comes when you have selected one skill (by following the above-mentioned principles) then, there are 10 principles of how to learn that skill (in writer's own words)
1- Research the skill and related topics.
2- Jump in over your head.
3- Identify mental models and mental hooks.
4- Imagine the opposite of what you want.
5- Talk to practitioners to set expectations.
6- Eliminate distractions in your environment
7- Use spaced repetitions and reinforcement for memorization.
8- Create scaffolds and checklists.
9- Make and test predictions.
10- Honor your biology.
Here you go, "The First 20 Hours" book explains how can you find 40 minutes a day and in 30 days you can acquire one skill. If you have more time in a day then you can acquire 1 skill in less than 30 days.
